Care of Your Leather Goods

As leather is a hide, it needs to be nourished in order to preserve it and maintain its suppleness. New leather should be treated straight away prior to first use with a good hide food or leather dressing, then periodically afterwards which will prolong the active life of the item. If your leathergoods get wet, allow to dry naturally at room temperature as excessive heat may cause permanent damage in cracking and weakening the leather.

Your leathergoods can be cleaned with plain warm water and a cloth/sponge, allowed to dry naturally and then apply a good leather dressing or hide food. Any brass fittings can be polished carefully with a household brass cleaner.

For the long-term care of your leathergoods, Emma recommends Abbey 1982 Saddlefood (formerly known as Hooper's 1882 Saddlefood), which will also strengthen and preserve the stitching. The Saddlefood is a blend of natural tallows, oils and waxes and no chemicals. It is excellent for use on belts, dog collars & leads, boots, bridles & saddles, leather luggage, leather furniture, gun cases and all working leathers.
